Organizing for Health - Training Series

We’re excited to relaunch our organizing training and political education space, Organizing for Health, with a training series focused on building a range of organizing skills across our membership.

Organizing for Health will feature bi-monthly two-hour sessions throughout 2023 and into 2024. Members are invited to attend as many sessions as you want and invite other health sector colleagues. Check back regularly for upcoming dates and registration links!

ABOUT ORGANIZING FOR HEALTH 2023/2024

Organizing for Health is an organizing skill-focused training series designed for people who work or study in the public health field, and others in the health sector, to hone their organizing and advocacy skills to support and work alongside/within social justice campaigns. Training content will borrow from updated virtual curriculum from the School of Unity and Liberation, hosts of our 2019 in-person Public Health Awakened national organizing training, and feature guest speakers and expert trainers. Sessions will deep-dive into specific skill areas and themes named as priorities by members and partners, including messaging/media, direct action, security practices, campaign planning, power mapping, and more.

Sessions are two hours. Registration required. Questions? Email sophia@humanimpact.org

Past Trainings:

Digital Security (February 2024)

Guest presenter:  Jack Aponte
Strong security practices are an important part of strong advocacy and organizing – they keep our work, ourselves, and each other safe. In the face of attacks on public health in recent years, honing these practices within our field seems as important as ever, both in our day jobs and other ways we’re pushing forward health justice in our communities.

This session will focus on why security culture is important and shared digital security best practices for yourself and organizations.

Power Analysis! (July 2023)

How can we better understand, build, and strategically leverage power in our public health sector in partnership with grassroots social justice movement partners?

This interactive workshop led by Human Impact Partners staff will engage participants in reflection on power and positionality in the context of public health advocacy/organizing and community power-building. Participants will assess their own power, define individual and collective power, learn about power mapping, and reflect on health sector power, including governmental public health and inside/outside strategies -- all toward actualizing our commitment to health equity and racial justice.

"Tell Me Why" The Power of Story (May 2023)

Guest presenter: Felicia T. Perez
The first half of the workshop will start with introducing participants to the theory of Story-based Strategy with a focus on learning how stories are used to change people's hearts, minds, and/or actions.

The second half will focus on exploring and developing a deeper understanding of what parts of a story need to strategically change depending on the specific purpose for sharing it -- whether that be for organizing, mobilizing, or advocacy work.

Intro to Organizing (April/May 2023)

This introductory session will delve into discussion about what organizing is, components of campaigns for social justice, and how organizing is different from other forms of change-making, and invite participants to reflect on their own motivations for building our health sector's organizing power to shift conditions for health. The session will feature a panel discussion with members of End Police Violence Collective, the group of public health practitioners who successfully ran campaigns to pass two policy statements at the American Public Health Associations about the health harms of policing and incarceration, both of which call for an abolitionist shift in public health practice and policy priorities.

Training content will borrow from updated virtual curriculum from the School of Unity and Liberation, hosts of our 2019 in-person national organizing training. Subsequent sessions will deep-dive into specific skill areas and themes named as priorities by members and partners, including messaging/media, direct action, security practices, campaign planning and power mapping, and more.
